Project Managers realize that they must manage risks and issues in a timely and effective manner. However, many project teams do not practice effective and continuous risk management throughout the project life cycle, preferring to wait until the risk becomes realized, and becomes an issue, before taking any action. This presentation will discuss the differences between Project Risk Management and Issues Management and review some tools and best practices that make both jobs more effective. It will also cover some techniques and recommendations for applying these tools. The objective of this presentation is show the difference between risks and issues, how to best develop the effective mindset and attitude to deal with them, learn risk management best practices, as well as risk management tools and techniques to apply consistent risk management throughout the project, and learn issue management best practices, and some effective tools for identifying, assessing and controlling issues on a project.

Ernie Baker, PMP, is the president of Start to Finish PM, Inc., a Project Management Institute Registered Education Provider, headquartered in Verona, NJ. The focus of Ernie’s practice involves working with organizations on program and project management initiatives. Over the past 20 years, he has worked on projects for clients such as MetLife Insurance, Morgan Stanley, Disney, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Mercedes Benz USA, IBM, United Technologies, A&P, and Johnson & Johnson. His experience covers Information Technology, Engineering, Pharmaceutical, Consulting, Sales and Marketing, and Project and Program Management. Prior to entering the corporate world, Ernie served as an Engineer Officer in the US Army Reserves, serving as a Project Manager for various Military Civil and Combat Engineering projects. His last assignment was as a Commanding Officer for a Combat Engineer Company and held the rank of Captain, USAR. Ernie was awarded certification by the Project Management Institute (2001) as a "Project Manager Professional". He is also a Certified Technical Trainer (CTT+ - 1998), a certified Information Technology Project Manager (Project +-2000) and a Microsoft Solutions Framework Practitioner (2002). Ernie is a frequent presenter, offering presentations throughout the US and Canada. Past attendees may remember that he presented to standing-room-only crowds in past Global Congresses. Ernie is best known for his sense of humor, his analogies, stories and insights into the world of the project manager.
