Stream: Strategic Project Management

Strategic Project Management

It is time to put project management on the agenda of your organization's next executive board meeting. Traditionally project management has been a tool for scheduling, planning, and execution. It brings efficiency and predictability to organizations that embrace it. Usually it is adopted by mid-level management to optimize one or two department's activities. Learn how the President and CEO of a 400-employee company used project management as their primary method to drive their Strategic Plan. Project management is ready for the board room. Learn ways to bring it to the attention of senior managers. This presentation was delivered to a standing-room-only crowd at the PMI 2006 North America Congress, and was chosen as one of the top presentations for that event. Do not miss the chance to see this presentation right here in Edmonton.

APEGGA Project of the Year: Agruim ESN 150

ESN (Environmentally Smart Nitrogen) 150 Project resulted in the world's first commercial scale (150,000 tonnes/year) production unit for Controlled Release Fertilizers targeted at broad acre agricultural crops. Prior to this project, a semi-works plant had been utilized to produce product for large scale field trials and to demonstrate the economic viability of the product made with Agrium's proprietary technology. This $50 million project, which represented a four times scale-up from the semi-works unit, was constructed in 10 months from full project approval and successfully started up within two weeks of Mechanical Completion. Despite the challenges posed by the extremely high level of construction activity in Alberta, this fast track project (100) was completed with a very modest 10 percent cost overrun. This combined Agrium/Jacobs presentation will discuss several key leadership factors and decisions that led to the success of the project, including bridge financing between project development phases, treating the projects as a turnaround, and close cooperation between Agrium, Jacobs and the sub-contractors involved.

Speaker: Glen Ford and Tyler Gervais

Glen Ford has worked with Agrium for the past 30 years in a wide variety of production roles. Currently, he is the Manager of Controlled Release Products at Carseland Nitrogen Operations. Glen has been a leader in Agrium’s Controlled Release initiative from the inception. Responsibilities have included research and development of Agrium technologies, pilot plant scale up which lead to the design, construction and operation of a semi works plant and finally construction the ESN 150 plant. During the design and execution of the ESN Project at Carseland, Glen’s responsibilities included technology owner, process equipment design and plant start up.

Bringing Clarity to IT Governance, Practical Approaches to Achieving Sustainable ITG

Business and IT alignment presents unique challenges. Companies may have too much or too little data. It may be stored and presented haphazardly. Or, it may not be relevant or useful at all. Today’s CIOs need every advantage to make themselves the most agile and proficient to present their case, improve their operations, and lead their businesses. Bottom line -- today's CIO’s need a “view,” or portfolio dashboard, to provide them with a new and pragmatic approach to gain rapid, predictable value from their IT investments and manage their businesses.

The effective CIO needs to know how to be best prepared to speak to their Board and other executives, and be equipped to effectively present the way IT is running successfully. The truly proficient and effective CIO is not focusing on IT Governance due to mandates, but is doing it because it makes the whole IT organization exceptionally effective.
